Symptoms

Hum, click, leak or nothing at all

A disposal that hums but does not spin has a jammed flywheel. A single click usually means the same thing, and a motor that does not respond at all has most likely tripped its red reset button on the underside of the unit or lost power at the wall switch.

Water is a different problem. A leak at the top rim points to the sink flange seal. A leak from the middle seam points to a cracked housing, and a leak at the side outlet points to the drain hose or the dishwasher connection.

Clearing a jam without hurting yourself

1

Switch it off at the wall

Unplug the unit or flip the breaker so it cannot start while you work.

2

Look from above with a flashlight

Use tongs or pliers to lift out visible debris such as a bottle cap, a fruit pit or a piece of glass.

3

Turn the flywheel by hand

Most units have a hex socket in the bottom. Work a wrench back and forth until the flywheel moves freely.

4

Press reset and test

Press the red reset on the underside, restore power, and run cold water for a short test. If it trips again, the motor is likely worn.

Repair or replace the disposal

Repair is reasonable when

  • The unit only jammed and spins freely again
  • A hose, gasket or flange seal is the leak
  • The motor is quiet and the unit is fairly new

Replace when

  • The housing leaks from the seam or the bottom
  • The motor hums, trips and fails repeatedly
  • The unit is older and rust is visible

Disposals are sized by horsepower. A half-horsepower unit handles light use, while a three-quarter or one-horsepower unit copes better with a busy household kitchen.

What affects the price

The quote comes before work begins.Free estimates apply to installs and scheduled repairs.
Repair or full replacementA jam reset is the cheapest visit. A new unit adds the cost of the disposal itself.
HorsepowerHigher-horsepower models cost more and need a stronger mount.
ElectricalAn outlet or switch under the sink may need to be added.
Dishwasher connectionReconnecting the drain hose adds a small step.
Drain conditionA clogged line below the disposal is a drain cleaning job on top.

Local note for West Chester kitchens

A disposal drains into the same kitchen line as the sink, so repeated grease use can build up in the pipe long before the disposal fails. If a replacement is going in, ask the plumber to run water and check the drain below it at the same time.

Service covers the borough, East Bradford, West Bradford, East Goshen, West Goshen and Westtown. If the kitchen sink faucet is also dripping, faucet repair can be handled in the same visit.

What to do before you touch a jammed disposal

Switch off the wall switch and unplug the unit or flip the breaker before any work. Never put fingers into the chamber, and follow the manufacturer's guidelines for the reset button and the hex socket.

If the disposal fixes nothing and the sink still drains slowly, the blockage is further down, and a sewer camera scope shows where.

A call from West Bradford is easiest to route when you name the road, such as Strasburg Road or Downingtown Pike, and say whether the house is on a well. That also tells the plumber what is under the sink drain.

Restaurants and shops in the Downtown Historic District, listed in 1985 around Gay and High Streets, run disposals and floor drains hard all day. A humming unit in a downtown kitchen is worth a call early, before a grease clog backs up the floor drain.

Common questions

It is jammed. Switch off the power, remove visible debris, work the flywheel loose with the hex socket under the unit, and press reset.

Yes, if there is power available nearby. The sink needs a standard drain opening and an electrical connection.

Grease, coffee grounds in quantity, fibrous vegetables like celery in bulk, bones and pasta or rice that swells in the pipe.

A steady leak into the cabinet is worth a same-day call. Close the shutoffs under the sink and keep the cabinet dry.

Yes. The dishwasher drain hose connects to a side inlet on the disposal, and the knock-out plug has to be removed on a new unit.

Yes. The line is open 24/7 for leaks that cannot wait.
