Repiping & Whole-Home Pipe Replacement in West Chester, PA

When the pipes themselves are failing, repairing leak after leak costs more than starting over. Repiping replaces the supply lines through the house.

My pipes keep leaking. Is it time to replace them?

Rust-colored water, low pressure at every tap, repeated pinhole leaks and fittings that crumble when touched are signs the pipe itself is nearing the end. One leak is a repair. Several in a year is a pattern.

Pipe material matters. Galvanized steel corrodes from the inside and narrows over decades. Polybutylene, a gray plastic used from roughly the late 1970s through the mid-1990s, has a record of failing at fittings. Copper and PEX are the usual replacements today.

What the repipe days look like

Repiping is disruptive, but it follows a pattern. On day one the crew protects floors, shuts the water off and opens small access holes where lines need to be pulled. New lines are run, usually from the main to each bathroom, kitchen and laundry. The water comes back on at the end of each day for most repipes.

Day two or three covers connecting fixtures, testing the whole system under pressure and closing up. Drywall patching and painting are often separate work, so ask who does it and when. A clear plan for the walls avoids weeks of open holes.

Pipe materials compared

MaterialStrengthsWatch for
CopperLong track record, durable, recyclableCost, theft risk, can pit in some water
PEXFlexible, fewer fittings, resists freezing damage betterNot for UV exposure, needs correct fittings
CPVCAffordable, rigidCan become brittle with age
Galvanized steelCommon in older homesCorrodes, loses flow
PolybutyleneFound in 1980s to 1990s homesKnown to fail, replace on discovery

Repipe or keep repairing

Keep repairing when

  • Leaks are isolated and the rest of the pipe tests sound
  • The material is still in good condition
  • A single section can be replaced

Repipe when

  • Leaks are repeated across the house
  • Water pressure is poor throughout
  • The pipe is galvanized or polybutylene
  • You are already opening walls for a remodel

Some homeowners phase the work, replacing the worst section first. That spreads the cost, at the price of opening walls more than once.

Lead and the water service line

Aqua Pennsylvania's 2025 report for the West Chester system lists a service line inventory at aquawater.com/leadmap and says it is responsible for removing lead pipes on its side. The utility notes that it cannot control the plumbing materials inside your home. Utility tap sampling in 2025 found lead below the detection limit at the 90th percentile.

If your house is old, find out what your own supply lines are made of when you plan a repipe. Replacing old supply piping inside the house is the part you control.

Related work

A single leak may be better handled by hidden leak detection and spot repair. Pipes that burst in winter are in emergency burst pipe repair. Replacement of just the supply from the street is in more on this topic.

Questions to ask before you sign

  • Which material will you use, and why that one for this house?
  • How many access holes do you expect, and where?
  • Will the work be permitted and inspected, and who handles that?
  • How will water service be arranged during the work?
  • Is wall and ceiling repair included, or priced separately?
  • What warranty applies to the pipe and the labor, in writing?

A repipe quote should be itemized. If it lumps everything into one number, ask for the breakdown so you can compare bids on equal terms.

What to do before a repipe

Know your main shutoff, plan for water-off periods and protect finishes near access holes. Pipe and fittings should carry the markings of the standards they meet, such as ASTM or NSF/ANSI 61 for drinking water contact.

West Bradford has three historic districts, Marshallton, Trimblesville and Northbrook, and a repipe in a house there is planned room by room around old plaster and trim. The township page describes the area.

Houses near Marshall Square were built long before modern pipe materials, and some still carry old galvanized lines. A repipe there is usually planned room by room around plaster and trim.
